Hey, look, I know things are a mess. I took a hiatus from blogging and decided to switch up my design before returning. Please be patient, because if you can wait out the mess it means REGULAR POSTING WILL RETURN SOON! :D

Weird Foods

I tried tamarinds this week for 101 in 1001. They came in a box from the produce section. And they look like, well...they look like turds.

They have to be removed from their shell and have little stringy things that have to be removed (neither of which is difficult to do) and they have seeds. They taste like a cross between a date and an apricot, or at least, that’s the best way I can describe them. I don’t really feel strongly for or against them. They’re not bad, but it’s easier to just eat dates (which look a little less like turds). Though, I do think they’d make a great substitute for Tootsie Rolls in this cake recipe*. If you want to try them here are simple instructions on eating tamarinds.

Would you eat a food that looks like something the neighbour’s cat left in your garden?

*I made a cake like this for a friend’s birthday once {complete with box and litter scoop (new) to serve it}. It was AWE.SOME.

I once ate a tamarind-and-chili-flavored popsicle. It was definitely an ... acquired taste.

Tamaring and chili, eh? Now that's weird!

I would only because I'm an adventurous eater--but I have to agree, it REALLY really does look like poop.

If you go to a Mexican restaurant you can usually order "Jugo de Tamarindo", or Tamarind drink. It is Andrew's favorite. I've tried chili flavored tamarind candy, and it was pretty good. It is a popular Mexican or Latin American flavor.

I'm sorry I couldn't eat something that looked like that. You are much more brave then I ever will be! Rock on!

I've never heard of a Tamarind before. They look uh... interesting.

Happy Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest Day from a fellow Albertan! Are you in Calgary?

Oh no, no, no! You must reconsider. I adore tamarind. Tamarind agua fresca is delicious, spicy tamarind candy makes my mouth water. Full disclosure: I am Mexican and we grow up eating tamarind. I try to introduce it to others, but most people do not appreciate the joyof tamarind. More for me, I say.

Stopping in from SITS...and yep, that does look like poop! Not sure if I could have eaten it though..unless it was just to totally gross my kids out! Have a great day!

When I was in Mexico, I discovered tamarind popsicles. They were AWESOME! I can sometimes find them in the more ghetto grocery stores here in Texas. Haven't ever had one fresh, though. Their appearance is, um, off-putting.
